PURE GROVER

What is it that strikes a spark of humor from a man? It is the effort to throw off, to fight
back the burden of grief that is laid on each one of us. In youth we don't feel it, but as we
grow to manhood we find the burden on our shoulders. Humor? It is nature's effort to harmonize conditions. The further the pendulum swings out over woe the further it is bound
to swing back over mirth.

- Interview with Mark Twain in New York World Sunday Magazine, 11/26/1905

Groverland is more than a virtual website for booking comedians and entertainers. It’s a reminder to cultivate your own sense of humor. It is a reminder that humor and human share the same origin. It is a reminder that tragedy and comedy are two sides of the same coin. Even in the worst of times, our species has drawn on this peculiar gift to get by.

Although, it has been my privilege to entertain and amuse lots of folks through the years, I’ve also been entertained in return – by fellow comedians and “civilians” alike. Some of my fondest memories, the kind that trigger instant laughter, revolve around certain family members, friends, associates and co-workers. Some of my biggest laughs have come from the most unlikely places and people. I am indebted to an odd assortment of personalities that have crossed my path through the years – some repeatedly, others only once. I’m sure you can say the same. Real life and the living of it provide a lot to laugh about. It is equal parts tragedy and comedy.

Well, that’s all for now. Just thought I’d share a few unsolicited thoughts. Anyway, I just love waxing nostalgic. It always makes me feel just a little…waxy. Or in the words of comedian Steven Wright:

- Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.

Keep the faith, folks. Stick out that chin, look up and watch out for sudden downpours. Meanwhile, Groverland will be here to keep you smiling.

Cheers!
